2023 International Emmy Awards: India took home two awards this year, including the International Emmy for Comedy for Vir Das’ Netflix special Vir Das Landing.
The 2023 International Emmy Awards took place in New York on Monday night (Tuesday morning in India), honoring the best in international television. This year’s 56 nominees for the awards were drawn from 20 nations on six continents. For its UK series Derry Girls and Vir Das: Landing, a stand-up special featuring one of India’s finest comedians, Vir Das, Netflix received two nominations for best comedy. Who prevailed?
Among the major winners of the 2023 Emmys was Martin Freeman, who won Best Actor for his performance in the drama The Responder. In addition, Jim Sarbh received a nomination for Best Actor in recognition of his performance as the lead in the Indian space drama Rocket Boys. The Empress, Sommerhaus Serien (Germany) won Best Drama Series. Mariupol: The People’s Story, Top Hat Productions / Hayloft Productions / BBC (UK) won Best Documentary.
The Best Actress award went to Karla Souza of the Mexican sports drama Dive, defeating Shefali Shah of India, who was nominated for the second season of Netflix’s Delhi Crime, which had taken home the best drama prize at the 2020 International Emmys. Balaji Telefilms co-founder Ekta Kapoor received the 2023 International Emmy Awards of Directorate as a mark of recognition.
Vir Das’s significant victory
For his Netflix series Vir Das: Landing, Vir Das received a second International Emmy nomination. Along with Le Flambeau, El Encargado, and Derry Girls Season 3, he received nominations. After winning, Vir Das and Derry Girls season 3 shared the award. This is the first time the prize has been awarded by an Indian comedian.
