This was the first respite from fighting since the Islamist group launched a string of strikes inside Israeli territory on October 7.

  • In retaliation, the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) started Operation Iron Swords in the Gaza Strip, which is governed by Hamas. The operation resulted in civilian casualties as well, sparking international demonstrations demanding a truce.Both sides have suffered thousands of deaths overall; around 1,300 Israelis have died, while about 15,000 have been killed in Gaza. In addition, the 2.3 million-person enclave is home to 240 Israeli residents who are being kept captive.
