Career
A study on a woman’s death after using nutritional supplements from Herbalife that Philips co-authored in 2019 was subsequently retracted by the Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hepatology. After microbiologist Elisabeth Bik and Retraction Watch posted the paper on their individual blogs, the retraction was reversed.
On Twitter and YouTube, Philips is well known for sharing his unfavorable opinions of Ayurveda, Homeopathy, and other complementary and alternative medical systems. He asserts that the “principles and practice of ayurveda are largely based on unproven observations from a prehistoric era that lack scientific rigor.” Ayurveda Medical Association of India, different ayurvedic medication producers, and the Kerala State Medical Council for Indian Systems of medication have all filed defamation lawsuits against him. According to a study by Philips and colleagues that was published in Hepatology Communications, homeopathic medications have the potential to cause serious liver damage.
